good afternoon ,ladies and gentlemen!
i’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! my topic is opportunities and challenges.
first, i would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. if i had asked this question to president nixon, he would probably had said,”our destiny offers not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity.”
needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to china is the 2008 olympic games. till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. how much changes have you seen? new roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.
other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the olympic games that cannot be seen directly. for example, more and more people will get to know china. i’m sure the mysterious chinese culture will attract them strongly. and the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. what is more, olympic games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of chinese youth with the olympic values and the olympic spirit. now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?
i’ve already said a lot about the olympics and china. but i think everyone should use some time to think of this question, ”does the olympic games have any special meaning to you?”
for us, i mean the chinese youth, 2008 olympic games is a tremendous gift. because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us .the society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”hey! come here and take the helm! ”how charming his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. this morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the olympic games waving its hand. after chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the olympic games. and mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfort to others.
at the end of my speech, i hope all the preparation will go well, and everyone will show their ability to the world. let us seize opportunities and give a big smile to challenges.
i thank you!

do you know helen kelleryes, the author of the book “three days to see”.i thank god for my handicaps, for, through them, i have found myself, my work, and my god.” helen keller’ words always resound in my mind. though she is handicapped, she never complains. always holding a grateful heart, she finally becomes achievable. and now i will tell you a real story about a boy in my class, he is just like helen keller.
the boy is named tim. he is very clever, but unfortunately he was born with handicap. being unable to walk steadily, speak clearly or write easily, he has difficulty in managing his life let alone studies. therefore, he has to suffer from the society’s discrimination, and he has to take more pains to catch up with his fellows. but he always wears a big sweet smile and is friendly to everybody. when i asked him what made him so happily everyday, he said the secret was simple ----he thanked that his parents never abandoned him, he thanked his teachers’ special care and encouragement, he thanked his classmates’ respect and help. now i know all these gratitude have given him strong power to move forward, forward and forward.
at the parents' meeting, his father gave us a deeply moving speech . he said:“ i knew the fact that he was not a healthy baby when he was born. at that time, i was overwhelmed with sadness, fear, and even anger. i complained to the god “why me ” when he was at the age of school, we went many schools, but we were turned down, when i was almost despaired, it was this school that accepted us. here i am grateful that this school gives my son a chance to acquire knowledge. and i am grateful that all the teachers and students give my son special care and love. l but the person to whom i’m most grateful is my son, and i’m grateful that god has chosen me to be his father.” as tears dropped down from the man, all the parents choked with sobs.
when life is good, gratitude is easy. but the boy and his father teach me when we are experiencing hard times and misfortunes, there is still a chance to find something to be grateful.
i cherish the belief that there is power and healing in gratitude.
so just learn to appreciate!learn to appreciate; we will become stronger, wiser, and happier.

the title of my speech today is "reading and playing the background color of life".
a boy was born on february 12, 1811, at the home of a poor farmer in a rural kentucky village. he had no chance to go to school because he was poor. he has been in school for less than a year. his mother could read, but never learned to write, and his father could only write his own name.
however, he was strongly attracted by books. he started school at the age of seven and went to school only two or three days a week. from then on, he began his own initiation education. he used the burned wood as a "pencil" and practiced writing letters on rough boards. at night, he read aloud to his mother the bible and read aesop's fables.
as a teenager, he looked for and borrowed a lot of books from all his neighbors over 50 miles, including the autobiography of benjamin franklin, life in washington, and pilgrim's progress. he seized every chance to read carefully. while other friends were playing hide-and-seek in the mountains, he was reading under a tree with a book in his hand. after dinner, he quickly picked up the book.
at the age of nine, his beloved mother died. he and his sister comforted their mother by reading her favorite bible verse.
when his father remarried, the stepmother brought a few furniture and three books to her new home: the merriam-webster dictionary, robinson crusoe and the night talk. he read the books over and over. he gradually became a proficient writer, so that his neighbors would pay him to write letters and simple wills.
when he was 21, he decided to go out. finally settled in a small village on the western border with more than 100 new migrants. the village has six college-educated education people, including two knowledgeable physicians who allow him to borrow their books at any time.
for the next seven years, he did two jobs that allowed him to work long hours without interruption. the first job was the store clerk, and the second job was the postman. he has read books on philosophy, technology, religion, literature, law and politics. in fact, by reading, he gave himself an excellent college diploma.
in 1837, at the age of 28, he was a practicing lawyer in illinois, even though he didn't graduate from grade one.
in 1861, he became the 16th president of the united states by running for office. he was one of the greatest presidents in american history, abraham lincoln
listen to this story, and you will learn something from it.
in human history, both domestic and abroad, due to study diligently and change their own destiny, and even change the fate of national, ethnic, affecting the process of human civilization examples are like the stars in the sky, countless. their stories influence and inspire generations of people, and the best way to learn from them is to read.
you can't get to know all the great men and masters of the world in real life, but by reading, it's possible. "to read a good book is to talk to many noble people," goethe said. you can't go back to the past, nor can you get into the future in advance, but books can take you to the past and the future. it is said that those who do not read are living in the present, while those who read books live in three eras - past, present and future. you can't travel all over the world, but books can take you to every corner of the earth.
words and books are the greatest inventions in the history of mankind, and if you can take advantage of it, you will not take advantage of the greatest invention.
reading means education, even school. "the school first meant books," says former soviet educator sukhomlinsky. not for teachers and students, enrich the spiritual life between teachers and students need abundant books, or have a lot of books and the lack of teachers and students of the school love of books, is not a real school, can say is a "manufacturing, manufacturers of the labor force".
do you like reading books? so start reading, harvest, taste, forge ahead! let's bathe in the book and enjoy it. the book is gold and precious; books are sunshine, unlimited energy. pick up your books! you can go to bed and forget your food. in reading, i harvest; i grew up reading. i love reading, i love harvest.
thank you.

on my birthday two years ago, many special things happened on me. and i would
remember them forever.
that morning, i rode my bike to school happily as usual. on my way to the
classroom, i saw some of my classmates. but when they saw me, they rushed away. that made me confused. because they would talk to me or play jokes on me before. but it was strange today.
when i came into the classroom, i found the atmosphere was quite strange.
everybody looked at me and laughed loudly. suddenly they all said in good order,“happy birthday to you!” then they began to sing “happy birthday to you~~~~~~” that made me moved. i never told anyone about my birthday, how did they know? i believed they must have done a lot of things. at that moment, i found nothing to say but thanks instead!
after school, a thing coming as a surprise happened on me on my way back home. when i was riding suddenly a crowed of people rushed out to stopped my bike.i recogized them at once. they were my senior classmates. they all comlained to me,“why don‘t you tell us about your birthday? don‘t you fear that we will let you stand treat? this time you owe us.” then each of them gave a gift and a card with best wishes to me. i was deeply moved again. i suggested having a dinner together. but they all refused because of the time. then they left me saying we would ask you to pay us another day!
when i got back home, i thought of everything happened today. suddenly i felt so happy because i had such great friends around me. i thanked them from the bottom of my heart. i would value the precious friendship forever!
i have so many feelings through that special day. the only rose without thorns in the world is friendship. a true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart. truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. one friend in a lifetime is much, two are many, three are hardly possible. stick to make friends, forlife without friends is like life on a desert island. to find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune, to keep him is a blessing.
thank you for your attention!
